Expired name - a name that has not been renewed at the end of its annual rental period. The name is still the legal property of the registrant until it enters pending delete.

Redemption period - a 30 day period when an expired name is release back to the registry by the registrar. the name can be reclaimed by the registrant on payment of a penalty charge.

Pending delete - the final stage before dropping when a name has completed it's redemption phase. The name is no longer the property of the registrant.

Dropped name - a previously registered name that is marked by the registry as available for re-registration by the first applicant.

Deleted domain - a name that has been marked for deletion by the registrar or the registry. Even though it has been deleted, it has to go through a waiting cycle before dropping in case it was deleted in error.

Pseudo or mock redemption - A new concept that is used by several registrars to enable them to retain an expired name for auction or their own use. They renew the name at their expense, and then sit on it for the same period as a normal drop cycle.
