Theres different opinions when it comes to SEO with pure RSS Blogs. Some say that it would be affected by content duplicatoin while others would debate that it doesn't. Some believe that you would get banned for content dups and while others say that you don't they say that the dup content just gets ignored.
But for my personal observation I run mostly RSS automated blogs and I have made enough to purchase Blog Organizer(BO) last week. BO will eventually give me a lot more time to start focusing more on SEO, while income flows in. My blogs havent been running long enough to know how SEO is affected, but I will know in a month or two from now.
I do like your idea about mixing both RSS and handwritten posts. However for me, right now i'm more worried about building blogs & traffic rather than focusing on building for SE traffic. Getting on that first page of the SE Results is a long shot for a SEO starter like me, but one must start at some point. The only SEO I'm doing right now is building my blogs around my keyword phrases where ever I can and watching out for it's density. With the sponsors' RSS automated blogs, its limiting to what you can do because you really don't control of the post text. When I have the time I'll merge handwritten posts with RSS posts in hopes to see better SE rankings.
We are definitely approaching blogs with two different concepts.
