I use AVG and recently Avast as well, though one or the other would no doubt be enough. And to be honest I can't tell you how good they really if the shit hits the fan since they've never found a virus for the last several years

I don't bother having resident protection turned on either (sucks system resources, which particularly isn't the greatest idea when you're a gamer and need everything you can get) and just run a scan every few weeks.

First lines of defense - a firewall and common sense, ie. don't open all those funny looking email attachments

or run files from unknown sources without scanning them first, and both AVG and Avast are available for quick file/folder scans with a simple right click.
