I'm also having a bit of hard time with the whole treating (violent) prisoners nicely thing, but if we do have to look at things objectively and take into account that anyone but the most severe cases will be hitting the streets again sooner or later (usually sooner here in Scandinavia, though I think there has been a, too slight, increase in sentence lengths for violent crimes recently), research does seem to indicate that they are less likely to repeat their crimes through treatment and education while they are locked up, and "locking them up to rot" tends to have the exact opposite effect.
Which isn't to say that if I was the tyrant dictator of Denmark I wouldn't have all those damn rapists and pedophiles excuted

Not so sure about murderers though - I can think of quite a few situations where I consider murder perfectly acceptable. Like killing a pedophile that molested your child.
Or just regular self defense if you're assaulted and conclude that your own life or health is at stake. Though I don't know enough about legal terms to say if something like that would be classified as murder - though I guess it might if the methods you employed were brutal enough (and why shouldn't they be if you were in danger).
