I have always felt a bit suspicious towards directories as to me they just seem like a type of link farm - full of links and with very little content. Whilst on a dry spot for hardlinks I thought it may be a good idea to try and submit two of my sites to a couple of reputable porn directories. Then whilst google has done it's rounds, both of those sites got bombed and dropped off from their old rankings.

I'm pretty sure it has to be something with the directories as both of the sites are quite different from each other, yet after submitting them, they both get the same effect.

What experiences have you had with directory submissions and SEO?
