The biggest problems with most directories is you are linking the them and they are linking to you. Easy solution to that is submit to no recip directories that way you are getting the benefit of a link in, without linking to them.
This has one major advantage that most people don't see, if the directory gets listed as a link farm by google, you have not got a link to them so you are not penalised for being listed in that directory.
Directories are worth the effort and some can pass on page rank to you and also they can send traffic. A directory with 10 links in it, is not worth the effort. A balance of small and large directories is the way to go. Only list in large directories you may get no traffic.
