Banners like I said before banners by themselves are nothing more than wasted space on a page. Sponsor banners are right up there with that one too. Now for a newbie sponsor banners are ok to use but once you really start working its time for you to make something on your own. Sponsor also have designers that are just that designers, they design, they like to make banners that look pretty, they may not sell worth a crap but hey they look pretty and they are large in size.. Some designers, not all, I don't want designers on my ass, but some have no damn clue what sells, they just do the job get paid and they are on to there next job.
Banners can be simple to exotic, its up to you. But remember surfers have to be able to download and see them, there is few ways to do this. One they should be smaller in download size and be able to load on a page quick. One little trick to this, is when you put the banner on the page, put the size in the html, on your other images dont put the size on the image, it will show first, now if the surfer is on high speed it dont make a hill of beans. But size does matter.. in that respect.
Make odd size banners, standard banners are 460x68 make them square, round, anything but that size, make them a gif, make them flash, blink, odd colors, grab the surfers eyes.
One thing to remember with banners and image size is there are still surfers on dailup if they don't see the banner or it loads slow, your not selling to them..
