So I dropped one of my speedlights a 430ex. It would just make this whirring sound when you fire it up because the flash head was jammed in the track it rides on.
Here is some pictures so you can see what happend...just incase it happens to you.
The head slides back and forth on that white track.
Note I never drop my 580EX though lol....it just doesn't roll off tables like the 430 does
