For as long as I've been doing business (including non adult), I've always refused to pay more than 30% of the total price upfront.
When I'm asked for more than 30% upfront, I just move on!!!
I move on even more quickly if I'm begged for a "quick $100 to pay for rent/food/etc...". I prefer to work for people swamped under orders rather than people who need to beg to get some work...
Also when I'm working with someone for the 1st time for a "big" contract, I split my order in several sub-orders and don't proceed to sub-order N+1 until the N is fully completed.
