It is very much trial and error - in theory they should all work - but in reality they dont.
I found four basic ones that I liked and just change around the CSS to change colors.
One thing to remember -- if you hand edit a theme to match up to a specific subdomain save it as another name -because editing a theme for one edits for them all.
