Plenty of people get paid to work on open source projects. There are IT departments with squads / teams / whateverthelatestbuzzwordforgsubgroups that are dedicated exclusively to working on projects. IBM had one, (I'm not sure that they still do). Sun, of course, and others.

The revenue from open source does not come in from a traditional license scheme, but from either: support contracts for said software, or cost control via better IT systems that do not require licensing and support from the vendor, or both.
