I have never used Pinnacle. You could download lagarith for free, but the intermediate files are larger than with Cineform. Cinefrom normally plays better and the files are still very large, but its a pro product. I would think Pinnacle should play well with it, but I don't know what options you would use. With the lagarith, you might need to use a proxy and I don't know if you can do that with Pinnacle, but most software can be tricked into using a proxy.
Always try to encode from and edit the best copies of the video you can. Think of generational losses like photocopying a photocopy... it works a couple of times and then starts to look pretty rough.
I do know that Vegas Pro comes with a version of Cineform. Edius (I think) comes with Canopus HQ. I think Ulead's editors let you use whatever codec you want. You might consider trying the demo versions of some of these products... both cineform and canopus hq have free codec readers so you are not trapped into purchasing their product to decode stuff you've worked on with the trials.
