Interlinking is not a bad thing, however you have to make sure you do it in a way that the search engines don't think your site is one site rather than lots.
The easiest way to do this is to link to other domains/sub domains you own, or domains you have free hosted blogs on. Lots of people make feeder blogs on free hosts and link to their own domains/subdomains.
