Regarding subdomains and linking to the domain. I had a number 1 position (domain) and a number 3 position (sub-domain). both on same IP addresses. both interlinked to each other, for well over a year until i sold the site. so its possible. on the main domain i also had a blog. this blog was not on the root of the domain. this blog was the one that had all the link exchanges. both sub and root were linked to that blog. there were about 100 link trades on that blog.
the key to this success story though was choosing 3 keyword phrases that had under 2,000,000 in the competition.
i have one on a front page listing on google havent checked the other search engines, but it's there. i get most of my traffic via search engine. this particular site has only about 35 hard link exchanges and, its a well optimized blog with a great deal of posts. giving the whole domain the relevancy i need because the link exchanges, none of them , on any domain i refer to in this post had link exchanges with another site of the same niche. i've only got to hosting accounts right now with all my domains hosted on them and none of them i have purchased unique IP's for.
my moral to my own story. hard work ie writing keyword rich posts...and not necessarily geared towards the reader either because when they come to my blogs they are looking at the pictures..not jerking off to my text.
