I agree with the members that said see who is at the top of SERP's and if the sites aren't SEO'd, then make sure your sites are. You are looking for longevity so once you are there, you stay in that spot.
We have been stable in the top spots (1,2,3,4,5) on Google for 6 months on our targeted keywords/phrases and yes Google changes their algorithm all the time but again, you also have the other search engines to rank in as well.
When searching for keywords, don't just focus on the main words(tier 1) but also go after less popular keywords/ phrases (tier 2 and tier 3) and their variations. When you get inquiries to your site, figure out ways to convert the traffic to a sale if its offering something for free, etc.
