Looks cool .

I just purchased $250 worth of Poser content the other day. Seems like every few months I get inspired to give it another go at "getting a creative hobby". Never really seems to stick for more than a few weeks though .

Oh my, poser becomes expensive very fast. Although there are tons of
free and excellent props out there (rederosity is good place to look)
commercial, high quality stuff has it's price. I especially love stonemasons
stuff and easily could spend a few k$ on daz3d alone

Excellent lightning. I hate the poser light system and poser shadows
mostly are just are a mess. What version of poser do you use?

I bought version 7 some months ago - and in addition to clothing, poses, light sets and all the other stuff I bought the other day, I picked up the new Victoria 4 character as well (that's the one I'm using in the image, but with a character set from Renderosity).
All that meaning that I basically had nothing to do with the creation of that image I posted, I just added the premade items to the scene, did a few minor tweaks and hit the render button .

One thing that's giving me a bit of a headache at the moment (aside from the fact that I obviously have a hard time sticking with this graphics stuff long enough at a time to really get anywhere, we're going on several years of on and off now - very little on and a whole lot of off ), is that I would really love to actually learn to model and texture and mix my own things with eg. Poser models and items.
Doesn't matter if it takes a few weeks or more to complete a single scene - I'm just looking for a hobby, not something to make money off.

I actually have both Vue 6 Esprit (can't get a non-grainy render out of that thing to save my life, even the pretty sample scenes come out looking like shit in my opinion - and it's slow as hell) and Carrara 5, but proper Poser 7 import and integration is supposedly unlikely to ever happen with that package because of company competition.

I just downloaded the Cinema 4D demo a few hours ago (and I have access to a website with a really great and very long video manual I just began watching). It's supposedly fairly easy to learn your way around the interface (compared to Max, Maya etc.), and the test renders I just did of a few included global illumation scenes were fast as hell.
There's a really great Poser plugin available for it as well - unfortunately it doesn't seem like I can get a chance to test it, as it's also a demo version and it apparantly doesn't go to well with the C4D demo without crashing the thing when I try to import an object or scene.

Main problems? The price. Sure, Cinema 4D is pretty damn cheap compared to Maya etc., but 685 Euro (plus 15% VAT) is still a fair amount of money for a guy who's still not sure if this hobby thing is ever gonna happen .
And it sounds like the 420 Euro Advanced Renderer module has several features you'll probably start missing sooner or later (ambient occlusion and global illumation for instance).
Oh, and the Poser plugin is also $150 .

I think I better try to see if I can get the hang of the demo version first. Fully functional except for the disabled saving function and a few other minor things, and it doesn't look like it's time limited. Should be good enough for trying out the tools.

Assuming I don't get bored with it again in another couple of weeks of course .

I got my first poser a few years ago from a good friend in excange for a few
cuba libre. He is a genius programmer but like most excellent programmers
he has serious trouble with graphics so he purchased poser hoping that even
he could easily create some models with it to test a game engine. He gave
up pretty fast and i got poser real cheap

It's about time that i upgrade to poser 7 (heard the have improved lighting)
but i think i wait t'll the next SR is out.

btw: you can abuse poser as modeler and for texturizing, although poser
is of course not designed for that and there are a lot of limitation.

The base of that alien fucking machine was made entirely in poser (and a
drawing programm of course)

Well, since i want to take that 3d stuff more serious and are more and more
concentrating on it i think i'll have to spend some money on prof. modelling
and texturizing stuff like shade, ZBrush , Deep Paint3d.... a good tracer
should be also on that list. Seems like 3dsMax is still preferred by the pros,
but 5.057,00 € and you can easily spend the same ammount on plugins
and not to forget the hefty price tags for 3ds props.

I am still working with poser 5. I see no reason to upgrade to newer
versions of programms if there is no real advantage and for strange
reasons a lot of established workflows won't work with newer versions.
But since i heard that there are some usefull improvments with 7 (like lights)
and it seems like most bugs are weed out i will give it a try this summer.

Of course what prog is the right for you depends on what you want to
use if for. Since i guess your interest targets human figures / porn
would say try poser.

Maybe you want to try daz studio first. It's a poser clone and it's for free:
http://www.daz3d.com/i.x/software/studio/-/?
I know some ppl who prefer to render in daz studio over poser.

What I was thinking, is there something I need beside that software itself? Like some addiotions for clothing and similar?

and where could i find some good tutorials?

That's the catch with poser. I spend a lot of money on poser props. Take
a look at the daz3d shop or renderosity or e-frontier.com or the
vast number of small shops. I could easily spend a $1000 dollar each
month buing only poser props i really want.

I think daz studio comes with some basic figures and props, just enough
to get you fixed. Maybe you should think about a platinum club member-
ship at daz3d. A lot of their stuff is reduced to $1.99 for members.
(damm, maybe i should sign up for their affiliate program)

http://www.renderosity.com has a gigantic section with free stuff. (although some
of that free stuff can not be used for commercial work)

Yep, Renderosity as Lyno suggest is likely to be be any Poser artist's number one source of premade content (clothes - and plenty of it rather sexy , characters, poses, expressions, lights, scenes, items etc.).
Or well, perhaps the second source - you're gonna need the base characters from Daz3D to get anywhere (Victoria 3, or the new Victoria 4, if we're talking about female characters), and they've got a ton of great content in their store as well.

Renderosity is also a very large 3D community with a ton of galleries covering most 3D applications - and active forums as well.

If you plan on using Poser for 3D adult content, you probably also want to check out Renderotica - http://www.renderotica.com/

Thanks Mihx, how could i forget about renderosity. Important link
bc daz figures come without genitals (after all, daz is a US company
Aiko3 base even comes without nipples!

I'm also interested in this one and thinking to start "playing" a little with those programs, especially with DAZ if you say it's free.
but, when you say, they come without genitals, where to get genitals then?!

and sorry, but can't get this with DAZ and Victoria, are those two separated softwares or?
