Lightest web-browser in existence?

I use firefox on my desktops and my laptop,.. also IE and opera on my desktop to test the look of sites.
I prefer firefox, it's what I use on a daily basis for general use.

I never said I'm having memory problems with FF. I simply wanted a browser that doesn't take as much memory as FF does.

And yes, I'm always up-to-date.

Unless FF has had its glaring memory leaks fixed in recent versions (2.x), Opera should use a bit less, especially after running for several hours - but it sounds like you're already aware of that.

Aside from that, how much memory your browser uses, depends on the obvious of course - how many pages do you have open and how heavy are they on images, scripts, Flash etc.?
Opera (and FF as well if I recall corretly) have settings in their preferences that allows you to set a certain RAM limit the browser should try to stay within (more or less succesfully ), but if you've got 1 GB RAM or more - and not a ton of other heavy applications open at the same time - there's obviously no point in forcing the browser to use virtual memory and disk cache instead, it will just slow things down. I've got Opera set to "automatic".

Again, I don't know your system specs, but if you've got say 2 GB RAM and you aren't rendering a huge 3D scene in 3D Studio Max or similar while you're browsing , what does it really matter if your browser is using 200 MB or 500 MB RAM?

Hogging up CPU cycles on the other hand can be a real problem, and it's one problem that - based on reports on their forums - have been persistent for certain Opera users through many versions.
Constant 100% CPU use is obviously caused by some sort of abnormal conflict, but if it happens it's gotta be more than a little annoying nonetheless. I've fortunately been spared with the exception of one version in the series 7.x a few years ago if I recall correctly.

I have 1 gig of RAM and while browsing the only app that is open is Winamp.

It's not really a problem - I was just trying to save resources because I wanted to install other apps that run in the background; apps like DesktopX and Windows Blinds.

i think you need to clean your comp more than anything
i have 1 gig ram and a sempron 2800+
and i have no trouble surfing with 5 or 6 apps open at the same time

something might be draging you down but i doubt its firefox
check your startup folder make sure its empty
then kill anything in the bar bottom right that you don't use or need

i have used it and it made my surfing faster

most surfing problems come from your isp
or a comp that can't keep up

you might even find its winamp thats dragging you down
some progs connect to the net and transfer information
