Fetish site colours ?

Just looking at design options for an adult site with a general 'fetish' theme.

It seems a lot of these sites run on very dark colours, usually with a black background, but how essential is this ?

Depends on the niche but usually i go with black for several reason:
Since i mostly do no bright sunshine but dungon or abandoned space
station theme renders the pics look mutch better on a dark background.
Same should go for most bondage pics. Public nudity (daytime) for instance
would be different.

I also tried dark red or blue backgrounds but gave up on them, to much
dependency on the monitor and the settings of brightness and contrast.
Colors that look great on one monitor can look awful on others, especially
on older monitors.

Great post lyno. I also tend to go for the dark colours. Don't different colours have different effects on people, mood wise? I remember reading that here on netpond a couple of years back.

Yep black / red combinations are what I'm trying to avoid most, they always look terrible if the contrast is poor.

I'm just wondering if the psychology behind color and perception is important enough to go to all the trouble.

Black/dark backgrounds and you can use red for links. White colored text is also ok.

Hmmm well I think it's important, but doesn't neccessarily have to be those colours, you could find another combination. Test a few out & see what works for you... I usually do that by asking my friends to tell me what they think. They're my test group

I mostly use black background and the cell and table color is orange, yellow or red...

try to make it light blue and pink and see how it (doesn't) convert... then you'll realise the importance of black/red :-)

I think pink / pastels have it's place in the teen niche (not that i have
much experience in that niche). Usually i try to go with the color scheme
of the site i send the traffic to.

Just made myself a pic to test the contrast thing on different monitors
(i attach the pic). On a old, cheap 17'' CRT the white background outshines
the pic much less then on a new CRT or a new LCD. No wonder, although
black is more of a dark gray on the old monitor and so there is much less
contrast.

I try to match the site I send traffic to. For most of the sites in the bondage/fetish niche that tends to be something dark (black, dark gray, dark blue, etc.).

I'd play with it though, you never know what will happen.

I try to keep it light blue/purple, even white, but sometimes, as lyno said, match it to the site I'm promoting.

I think there are some other nice dark color options, like some eggplant purple shades with grey, or a deep blue. I'd be attracted to a BDSM site that had some color that wasn't red!

successful paysites in a specific niche usually have very good reasons for their choice of colors. good advice in this thread, for fetish i go with black/purple too
