Do you still design for 800x600 resolution?

here is a firefox addon i use to display pages qucikly and easily at different resolutions

The Browser Window Resizer is useful tool for testing different screen sizes. It accurately resizes your browser so you can test to see if the web page you're working on looks right in all of the standard resolution sizes.
Window resizer supports the 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, 1600x1200 resolution sizes.

do they even make puters that run on 800 by 600 still? and if they do are the people using these old machines so tight they wouldnt upgrade puter and therefore unlikely to join a website?

Actually, believe it or not some people purposely set to 800x600 because the bigger resolutions are "too hard to read" or "too small and weird". I personally feel sick to the stomach when seeing 800x600 :P 1280x1024 is not even enough space for me!

I agree, its best to develop for 1024x768 (which is bascially like "the new 800x600"), but as apcwebmaster mentioned, it wouldnt hurt to simply "check and see" and make sure it looks at least useable in 800x600.

Another note that you should keep in mind is that those 800x600 people are often (in my experience) inexperienced computer users, or rather I should say "not completely computer savvy"... the same kinds of people that will whip out the CC to buy a product, because they arent all that aware of (or find it too hard to search for) all the FREE porn\warez out there for them And in this biz, every sale counts right? (especially at the start of your building...)

Two years ago, I would have agreed with you, but flat panel LCDs have hit rock bottom prices now, and this has made your logic faulty ...

Actually most people still using 800x600 now, probably don't have credit cards or the finances to spend $30 a month on porn.

Remember that generic brand 15" LCD displays are now cheaper than most CRT displays, and show 1024 x 768 natively. Most (not all) people still using 15" CRTs are in third world developing nations, or in extreme poverty, and using the PC that was given to them 6 years ago by friends or family that feel bad for them.

Not exactly prime porn consumers IMHO, so how much time are you going to spend trying to optimize pages to benefit them?
