Quote of the year by Paul Markham:

"It's the industries insistence to sell a $30 x 30 day recurring membership to a guy looking for 20 minutes worth of porn that's killing the industry. Meet the customers needs before someone else does."

You won't get rich if you only try to sell 20 mins of porn to someone looking for 20 mins of porn.

I understand that 20 minutes may be a bit long for some of Paul's stuff.

I think that what he means is that pushing a commitment, at $30/month, to surfers who are looking for just one set at a time, some variety every day is not going to work forever..

I'd say that it is NOT so much the PRICE but the perceived waste/commitment that turns most fools off to buying. You can see them saying, well, I don't need that site for a month, you can see them saying, fuck that rebilling shit, because they probably are scared that they might have to call their credit provider and admit to what they bought.

Why don't more sites let people join free with credit card and sell them individual content sets? I think that those VOD sites are a great idea, a great idea.

And once webcams are worth a shit there will be more personalized service at the cam sites - the cam sites and custom content and microniches will win out in the end once computers are good enough and bandwidth is plentiful enough (especially once household internet connections are worth a fuck- they're not, now, alot of broadband users still are between 128-1.5 and that really sucks)

That IS the problem if you ask me- other methods of delivery are all but superior in some ways.. once we're able to show a video to a surfer FULL SCREEN without it looking like shit.. and once people start buying larger monitors/using their PCs as home theatre systems.. that will really help (I realise that these things are already happening but I'm talking about when it is COMMONPLACE for your average surfer to have at least 10Mbps, big large screen, powerful CPU)

Sorry for my rambling- I am old

If all an industry did was meet needs, we wouldn't have profitable industries.

How many of you drive your car alone? Perhaps the automobile industry should stop making 4 door cars and instead focus only on cars like the SMART or similar. After all, if you only need 1 or 2 seats, while sell them the rest?

The food industry could be revolutionized as well. The idea of food is sustenance. Figure out exactly what people need to live each day, and make a nice snack bar they can eat 3 times a day. Get rid of beer and fizzy drinks, those aren't needed. Those are extras nobody needs. Identify what people need and give it to them!

Yes. People want 20 (or 30 or an hour) of porn until they are "satisfied". At the same time, they don't want it just once in a month. Would you rather go through the customer acquisition process each time they guy wants to spend $1 on porn? I would rather do the work and sell him $30 of porn once instead of selling him 30 pieces of porn 30 times. The costs to acquire the customer remain the same, so why would I not want to sell the higher ticket price?

After all, that is why many people promote high payout sites like cams and dating, hoping to make more money for the amount of costs involved in obtaining that customer to start with.

Paul has been off on this "beat the tube sites at their game" deal for a while now. It's actually pretty funny. He has never been able to explain why people would want to pay for what they can get for free already.

Customer acquisition as you refer to it is 95% of the ballgame..
If you can acquire a paying customer, even if the initial revenue is very small, you've acquired a paying customer.. to me it makes more sense to acquire more paying customers even if you don't make alot on them right away and then figure out exactly how to milk them.

Listen, playing games singing songs is cute but I've got a novel little idea here.. how about if we discuss the actual business related issues.. that might be interesting, and uh, or something, AND STUFF!
*sigh*.

BINGO. I've had some of the same customers since 1993. They are loyal. They will buy something I recommend without reading about it because I won't bullshit them. They know they get quality from me, so keep coming back for more.

Talk to them on a forum, let them get to know you, let them feel a connection and they will have no qualms about opening their wallets. If they comment on your blog, comment back. Let them know you are listening to what they have to say.

This used to be true from an affiliates perspective. However hanging onto your credit for the sale is starting to become a significant factor. Getting the surfer back for another sales attempt if the paysite tour fails is yet another consideration.

Exactly.. all of the paysites look the fkn same.... porn on tour, join page asking for CC... they don't even read the tours any more. Now when you establish repoire, make a connection with them, that's when you have them cold.

Absolutely agreed.
Especially with programs like AWE.. you've got an expiring cookie, for example, and they don't even keep paying you for your customers on the revs program unless they keep buying through your code. So, for example, John Q. Dumbfuck comes in through my link and buys some credits- I get 20%- he comes back tomorrow using the same account he created through my link, I get totally fucked dry on what is due me.
I might be wrong about that, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works. They do at least stop paying you your fair share on REVS when your cookie expires- that much I am nearly 100% sure of. And I feel that if you spent $1M promoting their PPS program you'd make probably three sales.

I think that alot of affiliate programs have a plethora of ways to fuck you right up your ass what with their upsells, tour leaks, untracked alternate billing methods, etc etc etc.
