1st place is at $9,760,000 per TF
2nd place is at $15M per TF

They're at something like .20%, one fifth of one percent, of the cost per tf

Nice system, but it's getting old now...

Note though, that you could do this just as well with normal PCs -- this technique really puts supercomputing within the reach of smaller companies and universities. Clustering is getting big nowadays -- 4/5 of the Top 500 list are clusters, though most of them are built by traditional vendors like IBM and HP (using desktop boxes like the did in the video will normally take far too much space). Even traditional supercomputers from Cray for example are now often built partly (or completely) as clusters, using normal PC processors from AMD or Intel.

Here's another cool one, built inside an old chapel: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MareNostrum -- it's 13th on the November Top500 list. It's built with a more expensive version of the G5 processors used in the video. No idea what the price tag was, but probably a lot more that $5.5 million. The vendor (IBM in this case) will commonly subsidise supercomputers delivered to universities -- IBM is know to be particularly generous in that department (and they have roughly half of the Top 500 list...).
