I've walked through the park next to the Embarcadero centre in San Francisco after midnight, and a few places like that. Probably my closest call was getting caught up in a Soho bottle fight as a kid.

I lived in new jersey the majority of my life I used to go into a 'city' called camden, I had friends that lived there. It didnt look like a clean place but I didnt think nothing of it. As it turns out, it is a pretty bad area http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6555449/

As a child growing up in St. Vincent, we often swam in La Soufriére's lake -- in the crater of the volcano-- The "island" in the center of the lake is actually a lava dome!
