The answer to the question is command line ftp. It is MILES faster than ANY gui ftp application.

If you are on a mac/*nix you already have it installed!

Assuming fairly equal proficiency with navigating command line FTP and a GUI client of choice, how can the former be faster than the latter? Especially "miles faster"?

If you've chosen a decent GUI FTP client it will of course be multi-threaded (I think Filezilla uploads/downloads in ten threads), and I'm assuming that the same applies to Linux/Mac command line FTP (otherwise it would obviously be slower if you're transferring multiple files), which means that it should really mostly just be down to the speed of your connection and the server, rather than the client.

Edit: Oh, and in the "Assuming fairly equal proficiency with navigating command line FTP and a GUI client of choice" part, I sort of left out a nagging question. Even with experienced use of wildcards etc., how the hell do you manage to eg. type out the (let's say long and very different) filenames of eg. 27 files in a folder with 200 others, as quickly as I can select them in a GUI and hit upload/download?

Try it and see. It's faster. I am not techy enough to answer why, but I bet any server *nix guys in here would use a command line ftp.

But if you like your GUI then I am happy for you.

I used filezilla on windows mostly because I wasn't a fan of smartftp.

If I'm uploading large files I use flashfxp.

Smaller files I just use FireFTP as it's much quicker to launch, connect and upload.
