Martial Arts Idiots

Y'know if I hear one more time about how someone has a 50th degree black belt blah blah blah, and then some I think I'll shit Christmas kitties.

Just had a match with a pal down the street with a 5th degree black belt. Umpteen different forms of martial arts, all credentialed up.

Fight took 12 seconds, 8 seconds of which was me twirling his ass around in the air before body slamming him.

We were just kidding around as he had promised to show us his stuff for years now. Got a little of the wind knocked out of him and he's no small fry either, he's 6' 5" and 280lbs. That was his mistake. Big men make easier targets. Hit him with a shoulder, lifted a leg and he was up and around.

I've said it for years, all the kung fu, karate, yadda yadda yadda ain't shit if you can't wrassle or box. Kung Fu at least teaches you how to wrestle and deadly wrestle at that.

Martial arts is about discipline and learning self control. The fighting aspect for the most part is to help build mental strength and courage. Many who have never taken it do not understand because they watch ultimate fighting and thats it.

It takes great mental stability to not make stupid choices even under pressure. When confronted by a guy with a gun you have to be strong to remain calm to keep that person from getting exited or angry. Physical strength wont stop a bullet but mental strength may help you out smart it.

It did me a lot of good. It speeded up my reactions, and it kept me out of trouble, made me calmer as well. It even improved my sex life.

It fucked up my skiing though. Pulling your knees together is not the best thing to do when things look dodgy on the snow.

I'm not arguing that martial arts training doesn't have benefits. I've been trained since I was 5 years old way before kung fu was popular ( I'm dating myself ).

It was a private, family and friends training because the mainstream was too commercial and didn't emphasize the culture and inner integrity.

My point is my pal knows all the tricks, how to do this and that and make it look good for competition but when it came to combat solutions he didn't cut it. Now if I stood there and posed and did all that preparation shit I would have gotten a more challenging match. I used a simple principle: Keep his feet off the ground and put his ass where I wanted it.

I've always weight trained and most martial arts contests don't take bodybuilding seriously they think it's for appearance purposes only but lemme tell you, the strength and control of bodybuilding can do wonders. There's throwing a punch with Chi and there's throwing a punch with muscle. Now combine the two and you are one dangerous mo'fo' which is why I avoid combat training anymore unless I can do some grappling and tossing. If I punch a guy, I will kill a guy I won't go into it any further.

Oh, and never let an Israeli girl kick you.

Good job Greg. Without knowing how to wrestle you're a no-good martial artist.

Maui Thai is much better I think. To many people still use their hands way to much when they are fighting. Elbows are much better designed for hurting someone and leads to more close infighting which can go well with grappling and wrestling.

Also keep in mind that a street fight is very different from sparring. It will all be over in a few seconds like Greg mentioned. Muay Thai is awesome - the best striking art IMO.

For every 1 good effective MA school there will be 5-10 shonky ones.

Unfortunately just training in your average ma school doesn't prepare you much for anything. You take your formal training which if taught correctly will prepare you with the so called theory and muscle memory. You need to take it further and practice, strenghten up, drill yourself over and over and over.

Nothing can really beat good formal training, but just rocking up to your downtown family karate club 2 times a week for an hour won't do much more than keep you a little fitter.

MT isn't really as much of a martial art in Aus/US etc as it is bag work, strengthening, speed/power training etc.

Every high level mt fighter I have known has done a formal art or does one along side their mt training.

Not surprised..kung fu isn't meant for today's steet fighting. It's more of an calligraphy art.

Same as here. We have around 12237654 Karate and Taekwon Do schools here. Most of them are crappy with crappier instructors (I've visited a few).

I can never cease praising the benefits of the basics of Kung Fu. I was trained in the classic forms and purposes. Believe you me if you got into a fight with someone who really knew their 'gung fu' as it was called when I was a kid and you lived through the combat you'd do so but blind, neutered, and lots and lots of tendons and muscles and skin misplaced and missing. It is NO frigging joke. However, you don't use those in competition.

As Flip mentioned earlier, about being a bouncer. I've been a bouncer too. 99% of the time you diffuse the situation.

As for a street fight, I learned that way back in the 70's in the Bronx and Brooklyn. There were guys who lived for street fights. Asswhippins were like daily workouts for guys AND girls. The women were the worse and legendary!

I learned then that all the training in the world is meaningless unless you can apply it in a situation where the unconventional rules. That's why I emphasize also the importance of wrestling and boxing. I've seen guys who were trained in boxing FUCK UP dudes who had major sashes in the martial arts. A boxer can take punishment and deliver a killing blow at a breeze.

I get into a street fight and I don't deliver a killing strike or a killing hold in less than 5 seconds then I fucked up.

Oh if you're a Maui Thai fan you'd love what we had in our Times Square studio! We used to produce comics there and teach Mui Thai kickboxing. Matter of fact a dear friend of the studio was Thailand's leading champion for years! He's a great, great man. A real sweetheart of a guy who always did the top notch job. I didn't spend too much time at the studio while he was there, but I got the basics.

I don't want to put his name in the text here as I don't want a search engine to find it and scare him

I prefer weaponry like arnis over martial arts with full body contact since I'm a skinny gurl. So I can't do the hardcore stuff.

I wish I could go to Thailand and learn real Maui Thai and not the watered down Thai boxing you see in the ring.

Same here man. I'm sick of seeing the modified versions of MT.
