I had a report of cp on a members site, so I go check it out like I am supose to do, the images looked like cp to me, but that isnt what got the user shitcanned. One video tried to auto download some crap from one site, then the next site he was linked to straight out put a virus on my pc, norton went ape shit. The user is now banned.. who and what you link is your responcability, If I get crap, I know your getting it, and so are the webmasters that go to your site and click on a link..

If you ever find anything like that on one of my sites, or that I'm linking to a site like that, then I'd appreciate it if you could post it publicly. Doing that helps me in two ways - it alerts me to the problem (which wouldn't be of my making), and it warns people that they will get public exposure if they do it. I expect there are other Netponders who think the same way - the more we can expose these cheaters and thieves, the less likely they are to try their tricks.

What's happening online is the same problem we get in the real world, gang pressure.

We operate by rules of conduct. Some break those rules aka criminals. When criminals get desperate they accelerate their attempts at intimiadation and extortion and put the kind of pressure on others via threats , blackmail to engage in activities that bring in the maximum return regardless of the risks. In Italy we called it "pizzo", protection paid to gangsters. In other cultures it goes by other names. You have webmasters out here who've gotten themselves in so much shit they'll do whatever possible to pay off those drug debts or extortion debts, protection, etc. Degenrate gamblers and alimony, child support payments. You name it, guys are willing to kill you for it.

Our population is so huge now it's becoming impossible to police it and maintain it. Given the opportunityh you'll have guys like this slipping in and engaging in all sorts of chicanery. That's why good people, honorable poeple have to be ten times tougher.

I got hit last week from a link in Google and ended up having to format. Even though my AV caught it there were .Jar files that that managed their way into my Java Cache. I ended up getting infected after rebooting which caused Java to load the trojan. My restore points and TCP stack needed for any type of networking were wiped clean from the registry.

what browser do you use sleazy? I've been using Opera for 3 years and never had a single spyware / virus infection while browsing the net and I've literally been everywhere

Actually all these crappy sites are quite worrying for me. Because I keep active-x disabled, and I'm selectives about sites where I allow j/script, I NEVER, EVER get spyware or visuses (well my AVG and Zonealarm helps as well). I did have a policy of never linking to sites that raised an active-x alert, but so many people are obsessed with Flash, that I have to allow it on some sponsor tours. If you're going to promote Flash, then you have to accept that you are encouraging surfers to reduce their protection, and you are helping Zango and the trojan installers to prosper. The best counter is to post details of webmasters and sites that use malware, and give us the info to stop helping them. One start is to block all sites using the Est group for hosting or domain name registration.

despite how 'lucky' I've been I do monitor things very closely on my computer

and HB brings up a very good point, you should be very safe browsing with active-x / java / javascript disabled although js is needed more and more thesedays it takes me literally 1 second turn it on or off (F12 -> Click)
