Vista is blocking my downloads

I tried downloading this free html editor http://nvudev.com/download/nvu-1.0-win32-full.zip

I don't seem to be able to download it or any files from any other sites for that matter. I don't what's wrong but I think it might be a problem with vista. Anyone know hot to fix this?

Not sure if the UAC (User Account Control) in Vista could be causing this - it was among the very first things I disabled on my system as I knew from reports that it was going to be a royal pain the ass and entirely unnecessary if you've got the usual other proper security measures in place.

If you've got it turned on at the moment, it takes just a few clicks to turn it off. Open the start menu, click your user icon in the top right corner and at the buttom of the screen that pops up is "Turn UAC on or off".
Be advised though, there's supposedly something about potential conflicts with settings or something similar in some applications if you've installed them before turning off UAC. Not sure how common that is though, since - as already mentioned - it was the first thing to go before I did much of anything else.

I just tried the download link you gave in IE7 (Vista 32-bit) - works fine for me.

you cannot directly download anything to drive c,

you can use your downloads folder or your desktop, otherwise if you are trying to download something under c directly it will give error because of permission. It is because of UAC,

if you disable UAC all of your things will be messed up because UAC moves some files to special folder so for example games are not working and your registration information just get deleted.

I think it's just from pulling the plug to much. I just bought this laptop and when windows freezes I tent to just shut off the power. I'm going to start rebooting from now on.

Oh never do that, when you do that the hard drive does not park, if it was in active seek. This can let the seek arms have play in it, you even just put your laptop in the back the bag and the arms wiggles and goes against the platters and its by by hard drive. Always reboot and shut it down the correct way, pulling the plug is called a hard shut down for a reason, it can totally destroy a machine. If for any reason a machine locks up even a desktop hold the power button in till the machine shuts down. Never just unplug one..

Which is why every Vista optimization guide list it as one of the first things to turn off.
Surely no one installs a new OS without at least doing a bit of research?

Here's a good guide (though I think they go a bit overboard unless you're looking to trim down the system as much as possible - there are several useful or cosmetic features I haven't turned off).

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532

Alright, so the UAC is listed as no. 14 , but it's the second one in the security section, after the annoying security center notifications.

Vista has hi-specs required too and it sucks...like you I use to plan of downgrading it to XP but my lappy distributor said that it might cause some errors if they downgrade to XP...got no choice but to stick to this OS. Glad that I'm finally getting used to it each day

Run a CHKDSK from safe mode to find/correct errors that may have happened thru several improper shutdowns ...

I am wondering how much are those "turn off vista and use xp" advices works?

I am also using Vista at my laptop, i had to uninstall my antivirus even using vista faster. But trust me, its not easy to turning off vista and using xp because i have loads of stuff in vista installation so if i want to make a good backup, it will cost my whole day, and reinstalling xp and restoring backups takes another day.

So it costs me 2 days to downgrade to vista, which is actually not a good idea

Unless you're using old hardware (most notably anything with less than 1.5 - 2 GB RAM) or run some very specific non-Vista compatible applications, it's really a perfectly fine OS - even if it might be somewhat more error prone at this time than XP (not particularly surprising given XP has been around for 6+ years).

As I already mentioned a few months ago when I got this Vista laptop, I love Vista and haven't had neither functionality nor performance problems.
The only unfortunate things that did start to crop up after the first few weeks were blue screens of death - on average one a week (something I can live with considering the system is otherwise operating fine around 16 hours a day, but obviously it still pisses me off when it happens), and while occasionally with different error codes, all pointing towards one or several less than optimal drivers, though unfortunately I haven't been able to narrow down which one(s) yet, and I haven't felt like trying to upgrade/downgrade drivers left and right just to see what happens (and possibly risk making matters worse in the process).

I still have this strong feeling that many of the people who are quick to say "go back to XP" either haven't actually used Vista themselves for more than ten minutes on a friend's computer, if at all, or they have but didn't bother to spend the 10-20 minutes it takes to find (and execute) some basic tweaking info to improve on some of the less than optimal default settings (something any remotely experienced computer user should know is needed with pretty much any OS - and most software in general).

Here's my simple take on it.
If you're currently using XP and are (almost ) perfectly satisfied with it - then don't upgrade to Vista and risk potential (if often easily fixable) problems, unless you're madly in love with all the extra graphical "fluff" (like I was - and still am).
If you're currently using Vista but experiencing assorted minor or major issues, use Google and find a solution. In many if not most cases they will be readily available, as you're very likely not the first person to run into said issues.
If all else fails, then by all means, spend a day or two downgrading to XP.
