What do you need done with mediawiki? If it's just an install, pretty easy if you have the right access to the server to get it done.

yup, got everything up and am playing around with the setup now. i can see customizing this thing is going to be a bitch already. oh well, it's just a playtime project for me for now.

Interesting. You could build some pretty cool sites with MediaWiki and put some Adsense on it...........hm. And users would add content to the site for you.

ya, if mediawiki wasn't such an irritating bitch to work with and you hadthe right ideas and advertised properly i'm willing to bet your could get some good adsense clicks. adsense isn't what i'm aiming at here though, and i plan on restricting user edits quite highly. the setup just works to serve the purpose for what i'm trying to setup perfectly.

I'm working on the early stages of a wiki as well, and everything I read about MediaWiki almost indicated that you should pretty much expect to have a programmer or a MediaWiki specialist on your payroll, even for fairly basic use and setup.

I decided to try out a few other options instead - first TikiWiki and then the flat file based PmWiki, which I settled with as it seemed (comparatively) simple to deal with while still providing all the functionality I need (including user restrictions - I'm using it for a solo project, at least in the beginning).

so far i'm doing alright with my wiki skinning, but indeed everything i looked at indicated that you basically need a fluent php coder or a mediawiki specialist to do anything serious with it too. for now i'm just going to keep playing with it, and maybe one day i'll be one of these specialists, haha.
