Dreamhost - Pros and Cons (Real Experiences)

Well I guess DH is good for hosting galleries and freesites, maybe some splogs with a few visitors. But not major sites, that can cost you serious money.

WOW, now that was a great thread.

Looks like, ill be signing up at cyberwux and going to keep my important blogs there. Preety much going to try to transition thing over there.

I plan on my network growing ALOT. So looks like ill need a more powerfull blog, you all are right, u get what you pay for. Thanks for the success/horror stories....

Got a msg, my B.A. cronjob was using too much server from dreamhost, so they renamed the file.

Time for a new host. lol

I have some non adult sites hosted there. They are lightning fast and then slow as hell. It's strange.

I have a few sites with Dreamhost and you get what you pay for. The problem is that because they are cheap and offer so much space they get abused. I have already complained twice this year about slow loading speeds of my own sites and DH replied that someone on the shared server was burning too much bandwidth or they had a faulty script (both times the offending site was disabled).

I use Hostgator, Dreamhost and ExMasters for non important feeder sites and my main ones are with A1 Websolutions and Cyberwurx.

A1 Web Solutions has 2 datacenters in Baltimore, MD -- One in the Baltimore Technology Park, and we also took over the CavTel Baltimore facility in September of last year to address our rapid growth in 2007.

I am a tier1 provider of multi-homed premium bandwidth with providers including Level3, Savvis, Hurricane Electric, and PCCW.

I have not resold for anybody since about 6 years ago, when I had a reselling deal with Lonex that went South ... At this time I looked into what it would take for me to be in full control of my own equipment, and have not regretted that decision even once since.

I plan to switch from dreamhost due to that exact billing issue that and I found a much better deal for like two dollars more on hostgator and have yet to find one person that has anything bad to say about them.

I guess they're fine as long as your main money sites aren't there.

As for you not surfing your own site all the time there are free services that monitors that for you and will send you an email if your site is down.

Nothing bad to say about DH. They are a great help and never had issues with them.

LOL, You got that right BadWolf! By the time they hear the growl, that sucker is gonna get his bite before they can do anything.

Stick with the winners folks. You DO get what you pay for. Hosting is the bedrock of your business. You spend xx hours getting a site up, making it look the way you want, Delivering your message to make sales. If the site goes down, loads slow etc... your potential customer is going to find another site that isn't having problems that is delivering a similar message. Bottom line, if your site isnt up and running smooth, You are making NO MONEY and not in the good way like Globo says.

I wanted to add that I was very dissapointed with dreamhost this month. BOTH my ftp and my php admin stopped working. Then when I went to cancel the hosting they wanted 9.95 for my free domain that I supposedly registered with them. I am using them for nothing more then my domain registration right now because its cheaper to renew them there.

Unfortunately, that's standard operating procedure for many hosts and in my mind it's pretty close to a scam.

Never register your domains with your host.

So you got burned but you're still keeping your registration with them?

I like my DH account, and I feel that I get more than I pay for. It's cheap enough that there's no real reason not to have one. My site is up most of the time, and working great. I can develop a lot of domains and just never really worry about them. It's also a great account to have to learn webmaster skills with. Learn to FTP. Get familiar with a shell / command-line. Learn to install your own scripts. Experiment with different designs, different colors, different text. Make galleries. Learn a little php or MySQL. Install all of the easy one-click scripts and try them out. Store 20GB of photos or videos for your promotional use. Host your banners or photos or movies and don't worry much about hotlinking. It really is cheap enough that EVERYONE should have one. A few of you could even go in on one together if money is tight. You can create new users, and they are jailed to their own login area with their own domains.

If you have good sites earning money, then you can afford a "better" host for those more important sites and afford to have your somewhat disposable Dreamhost account at the same time.
