Today's webmaster almost doesn't have to FTP anymore either, and may not even know which FTP client to use. Especially with some of the recent scripts for galleries, videos, and blogs and feature-rich control panels.

All FTP clients are pretty much created equal (aside from FlashFXP) and work the same way. Even if they look totally different they have to adhere to standards set by RFC specifications.

I use and recommend CuteFTP which has been my choice for about 8 years. As for SSH clients there is none greater then SecureCRT and only one free which is Putty. You can also use NCFTP (has to be installed) or WGET server side which is what most hosts use to suck over data.

If in doubt you can always ask your host to recommend something worth using.

You know, I pay for more resources than I need for my virtual accounts and I'm very happy with the hosts I have virtual accounts with. I just don't understand paying for a shitty host when there are good virtual hosts out there.

Is it worth it having your sites down to avoid paying five to ten extra dollars?

It costs me 15 bucks to transfer it to my new host. Money I don't have at the moment. And I have used ftp now since 2005 when I started my website. NEVER had a problem with it before, nor did I have any issues managing my php admin as well. I am not a newbie to this.

It is a major conflict of interest for your host to be your registrar. I would suggest a 3rd party to handle your names. Head Boy for one is a reseller and has many customers on the pond. Then you also have Dave who has a Godaddy reseller account and both will accept points payment. Maybe you could work something out with one of them which might be more cost effective.

Yeah it shouldn't take 15$ to transfer a domain, that means the registrar you're transferring to charges 15 bucks per renewal? That's definitely too high

I already found a new host. I moved from dreamhost and am not with hostgator. So far no issues.

I've been with Dreamhost a year for all my adult sites and I haven't had any significant problems with them. Support has always answered promptly and downtime (which was irritating a few months ago for a while) seems to have greatly improved. I pay $60 a month to a separate VPS host for my mainstream sites (LiquidWeb, also a fantastic host) ... but all in all I'm very satisfied with Dreamhost.

I didn't really have any issue with them, but I had used that $10 for a year special, and when it ran out I didn't find it worth $10 a month. The only 2 issues I had was:

1. They disabled my site once, saying that google and yahoo were indexing my site and slamming it so hard so often for so long that it was effecting the rest of the users, and they would only re enable it if I put a robots.txt in blocking them from indexing it. yeah whatever.

2. Mostly my fault I guess, but when my year came up I just stopped paying them, they continued to bill me for 4 months, then when time came to renew a domain I had registered with them, they wouldn't let me until I paid them what I owed them.
