Dreamhost - Pros and Cons (Real Experiences)
Hey everyone. I have been having this ongoing dilemma in my head for about a month now. I currently use dreamhost. Now i have never noticed a problem, but i also have not read anything positive about them either. (im also not surfing my own sites 24/7 for me to notice anything.)
Im currently playing about 10$/month for hosting, this is cheap i know. Total Bandwidth Provided: 5024 GB ($0.1/GB over) Total Used So Far: 16.377 GB Estimated Average Usage: 43.176 GB (at end of billing period) Estimated Overage Charges: $0.00 these are my stats, i do get a decent amount of traffic so bandwidth will always be an issue. According to dreamhost this is what i used for FEB already. Dreamhost Provides 5,024 GB. I only used 16 so far and prob only 43 at the end of the month. This is still almost 50GB/Month in bandwidth. Dreamhost also is providing me 250GB of Storage, Granted i only use 300MB lol, but its there if i need it. NOW......can you please give me your HORROR Stories and/or Success stories. Is the cheap price really a cover up for shitty hosting? (Cyberwurx's Legend 3 Plan is 50$/Month, and only provides 50GB of bandwidth and only 1,500MB of storage - But is supposedly more reliable..) |

I keep a few TGP/MGP gallery domains on dreamhost... and for the most part it works fine. Once in awhile MySQL will go down, or the site will load slowly.
But for $10/month... I can deal with that. I keep my more important things on a dedicated. |

Compared to most virtual hosts they're pretty good, they just give so much bw and disk space that people compare them to dedicated packages.
I've run galleries on the hun without problems (Not often, but a few times) and when there's downtime I at least usually know what's going on. They definitely were better quality in 2006, but still serviceable. |

Well I had my biggest site there, and when it reached 5000uq/day (wordpress with wp cache) it just was to much and all my sites hosted there got "internal server error". I'm in the process of moving to a1 web hosting

I just finished transfering my site to A1 hosting. I'm not an experienced webmaster, and I valued the DH support and their wiki, but Tim, a1 owner, guided me all the way, and solved all the problems on the go.
And the site runs MUCH faster now from here (europe). It's not much more expensive and you know that they won't stop your site from using too much resources like it happened to me on DH __________________

I use them for all my splogs and never had a problem. I am quite happy with them. Support has always helped when I needed, scripts have been working fine... and the BW they allow is great for a few of my gallery submitting domains.

Been with Dreamhost for like 3 years now, and while yes there is some downtime and other issues, but nothing bad enough to make me want to move my sites. I dont keep many important sites on Dreamhost, so its not really my mission critical hosting.
Really you should keep your dreamhost account AND get a Cyberwurx account, just to relieve some of your concern. __________________

ok, I guess I have a story of annoyance...I was with dreamhost for 1 1.5 years, then one day I got an email telling me that my sites were using way too many resources and my only option besides suspension was moving to their VPS service.
The problem was, when I monitored the server, it was never at a load greater than 4%. I think I was moved to VPS just as a new income stream for DH. Even thought I am on VPS and supposedly can't affect other users, they won't let me run certain scripts, and I can never depend on cron jobs to run, so I can't use BO on DH. |

i use them for blogs and some tgps, been with them 3 years now and sometimes the sql goes out or none of the domains will resolve but it's maybe 1% of the time. they are helpful with a server status checker, which checks your specific domain or situation. overall they are good guys and a good host.

I also have a dreamhost account for more than 3 years now. No major problems here, but as many others already told: I don't have the important sites there. Those are at cyberwurx
but I never had problems with mysql database, the support lately was excellent (got reply to my tickets in less than 10 minutes) I am not using on the "promised" capacity, so probably that's why I don't have problems. |
