Router problem?

I'm having problems connecting to the internet from my notebook, went to the computershop and the guy was able to connect just fine but when I go to a hotspot I'm able to connect but unable to surf the net?? This is my old notebook that my ex GF gave back to me, her son told me he "tuned" it but apparently he must have fucked up something but even the guy at the shop couldn't tell me what the problem is?

Any suggestions?

Oh, I was about to reformat the whole damn notebook but the computer guy said that wouldn't solve the problem so I'm clueless what to do, I never had probs like this when I first had this PC :/

Depending on the OS, check internal firewall settings. If you are connecting to the hotspot and the IP is correct something else is blocking and probably not the hotspot. You could do an IP release and reconnect just to be sure. I would shut off any internal firewall you have on that notebook and see if it gets out on the web that way. Make sure you dont come up with the default C class IP, which would mean you are not connecting.

If you can connect to a wireless network but can't surf then I'd check tcpip settings. Open your network connections. R-click Wireless Network Connection>Properties. Double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). Make sure it's set to 'obtain IP address automatically' and 'obtain DNS address automatically'

I travel lots and this happens to me frequently especially outside of US/EU or when using homemade hot spots (not tmobile or McDonalds etc) like a random coffee shop.

Try another place first -sometimes the problem just is the way the wireless router is set up and I find it is not worth it to figure out why a certain coffee shop wont connect. (Honestly Starbucks and McDonalds have the best connections -I can find and that is globally... most you can connect for free if you buy a coffee to test the connection). With a good connection you can narrow it down to where the issue lies

I usually find that by wiping out going under wireless networks and wiping out all the profiles it resets something and I get a clean connection.

Also - the be sure to check your tcp/ip that it is set to obtain a DNS automatically. I have found that many "help" desks on random hotel and isps will tell a user to enter a static IP - this helps for that one time, then your screwed next time.

The issue is surely in your wireless settings.
