Nothing new as hosts are opening up every single day of the week. Many will never get more then 2-3 customers and try to sell at a loss to gain more momentum. Others are going for gain quick profits and some who cannot cover just up and skip out on paying their providers. Even brand new services will claim to have been around since 1998 when they just started a week ago. So you should look at the whois see if their info is real or protected and how long they have really been around. Try a few searches in Google to see if there are many complaints and then give them a call at about 2am their time. If they claim 24hr support and no one picks up the phone or calls you back promptly then you have your answer.

The whois really isn't that accurate of a tool to use to judge how long a company has been in business. For example, the current registrant might have taken over the company recently. Buy outs happen all the time. Names get changed. Likewise, maybe the company has been in business for an x number of years and changed their doing business as name?
I do agree with using the whois to see if the information is blocked or not and whether or not the information is accurate. If the information is viewable, take the time to check it for accuracy. |

Whois data is a very good indicator and if the name is fairly fresh you should ask for prior company name. Then you can research the old name and see what type of reputation they had in the past. I would love an unbiased BBB type rating service for hosts but they are just prone to corruption. Most all the existing and so called reputable host rating/review/award services give higher rating or only rate paid advertisers.
