I think the 5% that can do it are the ones who's thumb joint can move backwards slightly. It is a genetic quality, like shaping your tongue like a tube. I can bend my thumb backwards and that's likely what is enabling me to push it that extra half an inch further. But my hands becomes bend more than 90 degrees... more like a 100.
