Finding your true competition in the se?

Someone just tolled me a great tip on finding your true competition instead of using "keyword" you use allintitle: "keyword"

What it will do is give you only the pages where the keyword or key phrase is placed in the title, people ho dint have keyword or key phrase in there title are 99% not your competitors

Maybe it is a old trick i don't know but i never had heard of it before and thought well maybe you would like to use it (and it gives me some good karma )

I just tried this with allinurl:"keyword" for one of my sites. I was 4 in google. I tried again with just "keyword". I was 13th. That's 9 more sites above me. In what way are those 9 sites not my competitors? I don't get it.

This is not to check your place in the SERPS but how many competitors you have for that "keyword"

I can see it has it's uses, if the keyword is in the title YOU have put it there meaning a rival who specifically selected that keyword. It has not had the key search phrase pulled from the content of the page.

OK, I see what you are saying. You can see who is targeting that keyword by putting it in their title. But the other sites that rank higher than me in a natural search are still my competitors as far as I can see.
