Is the Industry Getting Better or Worse?

some people who used to make shitloads a few years back are cashing out now, others are starting fresh with new ideas and doing well. Is the industry better now then it was say 8 years ago?

i understand the importance of diversifying to survive, but even considering that , how do you compare the two timeframes?

it's it for better or worse, aaaah... it's CHANGE, and change is always good. people have the choice to bail-out or ride the wave into the new era.

remember when visa cracked-down on the industry, it tripped some people out.. and others rode the wave. remember when avs's took a dump, what was next? vod, and more..

diversify and keep creative, defnitely.

I keep hear it's about adapting, but I don't want to adapt and put up stolen videos and make a tube site to adapt. When I did a poll of surfers, most said they don't go to tube or torrent sites. It could be age-related as most of those surfers were older and not college kids.

8 years ago it wasn't hard to make money. 14 years ago it was easier. Today it's not hard, it's not easy, it takes work.

It takes more than getting a free host, putting up RSS feeds on a splog, trading a few links, and then sitting back and expecting $1k a day.

You need to diversify and need to open your mind.

quoting for truth, agree 100% i don't worry about if it's getting better or worse, i just focus on what works for me, and trying new ideas.

Getting worse I think but it won't be real bad until bandwidth gets crazy cheap. I think we have about 10-15 years before porn goes belly up

You think bandwidth is expensive?????

I began when it was $12.50 a gig.

Right now it's about half a buck a gig.

yes and you can get it for as low as 10 cents a gig but imagine when it gets to 1 cent or cheaper and as the increase in download speed. More and more the fhg model will die as surfers will not respond to small sample clips.

Not long after that every site will be some sort of tube site and returns will drop drastically.

Dealing with change is the cornerstone of any company. And as Webmasters, we are companies, not employees. Maybe many guys don't actually have legally formed businesses they get their payouts through, but the philosophy is the same.

With every downward economic turn, a multitude of new, untested opportunities reveal themselves. Be aggressive with your new ideas, don't be afraid to fail, and if it's just too much pressure to think ahead of the pack, sell your tired, useless domains to BadWolf.
