Any Pinnacle Studio experts in the house?
That would be Pinnacle 9.4 to be more precise.
Here's the deal. Every time I create an AVI file from Pinnacle it takes on a slightly greenish tint. The good news here is that it's all but unnoticeable the first couple of times around. The bad news is that this discoloration is cumulative. That is to say, each and every time I import the same file back into Pinnacle for further manipulation and then create a subsequent AVI from the same, it gets greener. Now, here's where it gets really mysterious. The program is two years old (roughly) but I've had this problem for only the past few months. I don't think this is about catching a virus because I have the same program on three offline computers and the problem has manifested itself on them as well. Note: When I say offline computers I mean mostly offline as I will plug those boxes into the net from time to time to download product updates, but nothing else. Anybody have any idea what the problem could be? __________________

Are you sure you are using the same encoding profile that you were a few months ago before the problem started? Are all of your codecs the same? Is the color space different ? I would bet on color space conversion issues myself, but that is a wild ass guess.
Also, unless you are using a lossless codec you will experience significant generational quality loss. A lossless codec would be something like lagarith or cineform.... actually cineform's 8 bit is only visually lossless and then only through a few generations and without significant color converting back and forth. |

Is this something I can adjust in my program settings (near as I can tell, I can't), or do I need a real high powered program to to get a lossless codec? __________________

I have never used Pinnacle. You could download lagarith for free, but the intermediate files are larger than with Cineform. Cinefrom normally plays better and the files are still very large, but its a pro product. I would think Pinnacle should play well with it, but I don't know what options you would use. With the lagarith, you might need to use a proxy and I don't know if you can do that with Pinnacle, but most software can be tricked into using a proxy.
Always try to encode from and edit the best copies of the video you can. Think of generational losses like photocopying a photocopy... it works a couple of times and then starts to look pretty rough. I do know that Vegas Pro comes with a version of Cineform. Edius (I think) comes with Canopus HQ. I think Ulead's editors let you use whatever codec you want. You might consider trying the demo versions of some of these products... both cineform and canopus hq have free codec readers so you are not trapped into purchasing their product to decode stuff you've worked on with the trials. |
