Grand Theft Auto IV stabbing and mugging in the UK

A stabbing and a violent mugging today marked the long-awaited release of the violent computer game Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA).

A 23-year-old was repeatedly stabbed in Croydon, south London as he walked past 100 people queuing to buy the controversial game, in which players rob and murder their way through the criminal underworld.

A hooded man with a knife - who is thought to have known the victim - jumped out of the line outside Gamestation and stabbed him several times before running away.

Meanwhile in Manchester two young men broke a teenager's jaw and nose as they snatched the game from his hands.

I have always thought games that make extreme violence glamorous is wrong, and time and time again there has been evidence that many people cannot distinguish between reality and fantasy in everyday life. The average person that plays a video game does it because its fun, however considering statistically speaking 1 in 4 people have some kind of mental issue, there is a 1 in 4 chance that someone can not totally tell the difference between a game and reality.

I never understood laying blame on the game (music, singer, tv show, movie).

Speaking about the 2 young men.I'm willing to bet they don't have any mental problems, they just wanted to game and thought they could get away with doing it.

For the guy that did the stabbing.Well he just might have mental problems. But I still can't say its the games fault.

I got the PS3 and a 32" LCD at tax time with my tax check but haven't snagged GTA4 yet I plan on it though enjoyed Vice City. I am more into the games like Resident Evil and Drake's Uncharted or the always popular Elder Scrolls. My kids enjoy it though I have had all the playstations from 1-3 and have a huge rack of games. I put the PS2 in their room (since they are almost 5 they don't mind) I snagged a whole box of PS2 items at a thrift shop for like $5 and have all the accessories with it now to.

I am just waiting for Resident Evil 5 to come out. Also looking forward to the new Stargate and Star Trek MMORPG PC game that is supposed to drop eventually.

I've heard that news, I think It's not dangerous, the people are just really excited about it.

While I do not condone censorship, the violence in some video games disturbs me. I think it stands to reason that if millions of people use a low quality reality simulator to commit virtual violence; a few of those people will live out that violence in real life as well.

I might not have resorted to stabbing, but I certainly know I wanted GTA4 so badly that I - after EB Games called Friday and said they wouldn't be able to deliver on my two weeks old preorder - went out and ordered one copy online yesterday and picked up another when the stores opened today, just in case the first one got delayed in the mail.

Anyone need a PS3 version of GTA4? I've got a spare .

Amazing game by the way. I'm just about to sit down for round two - and I don't really expect to get much of anything else done this week .

I love GTA. I can't wait to play GTA4. First I got to get a PS3. I have been playing GTA since GTA2 was on dreamcast. Yes, I had a dreamcast.

Anybody that blame people actions on a game is DUMB! People will be people no matter if the game come out or not.

There is enough evidence about that shows violent video games do have an effect. I'm like most people and dislike censorship, but when it comes to people killing and being violent because of a game that could have been toned down then something has to be done. I don't know about America and other countries but in the UK video games have the same rating as videos and DVD's but that does not stop kids getting hold of them.

We have the same thing here, with the rating system but,
you can't blame the game for the parents not doing their job.

And just cause I like to play devils advocate. Saying a game makes people kill is alot like the anti porn groups saying porn makes child predators and kills marriages.
