your portals will include a few micro-niche pages to help pick up [hopefully] high converting surfers. It will help if you understand the concept of micro-niches, and how to learn to sell them. Guys peeking in bedroom windows are not the same niche as guys looking up girl's skirts in public parks, although the same surfer may be interested in both.

Freesites are nice structures to include in portals, especially if you make them text rich. Here are some Netpond tutorials on building freesites.

I like the tgp2 idea of using fewer images and including text with the large pics. I wouldn't suggest trying to submit them, but I've used variants to bulk up sites. I've had some success with them, both for SE indexing, and for sales.
