$6.5tn US gov't debt

i just read in a newspaper article that while military spending will exceed $1tn this year, the US government has accumulated a total debt of US$6.5tn with other countries. that is not counting the tens of trillions$ of debt accumulated by US companies and individuals.

the article concluded that the US is totally bankrupt. that foreign countries like china have stopped lending to the US gov't and are demanding paybacks. that the next president will have to deal with all of that, fucking tough job. and that no matter what he/she does, the US economy is headed for a total implosion in the coming months/years.

it's hard to imagine these figures at all, but it sure doesn't sound good for our mostly dollar-based biz. thoughts?

Speaking of the next leader, I was thinking to myself... anyone think it, er, kind of "strange" that it is almost certain the US will be having EITHER its first black president OR its first female president?

Get rid of 9 tenths of your lawyers, and get them working on farms and in factories.

Stop trying to rule the world, and try to rule your own country

Make legal extortion illegal.

Encourage business to stay in the US, and make it attractive for the rest of the world to use your services.

Nationalise Visa, and work to reduce the amount of credit buying of non-essentials.

why do you think that is almost certain? don't count out the republicans yet.

no matter who it is, looks like he/she will have a tough road ahead. the deficit is only one of several huge problems that person will have to solve.

Sadly, that is far from the full scope of the Federal Government's debt. At least in the US, most businesses must use the accrual method of accounting- one that takes into account future debt obligations among other non-cash factors. The US Govt uses the cash based method of accounting. If the US used the accrual method, as any large business is required to, the debt would be roughly TEN TIMES that. Yikes!

Also, this is just the debt of the Federal Government, and doesn't include the massive amounts owed and obliged by state, county and local govenments. Add those for a truly staggering sum, and you will see just how fucked we are.
