Not even the file freehosts (Which are the subject of this discussion really) allow direct download, they make people jump through captcha and timer hoops so what I would do is for instance use the hidepost plugin on wordpress to force people to register to be able to download the file, that will slow them down and avoid overloading the server

There are many video file hosts that don't (easily) promote searching for other videos, and these may be a solution over using tubes and self-hosting on a shared server. YourFileHost and several others are ad-based, and while they do provide links to their top posters, the search function - supported by Flurl - is pathetically slow and overburdened and few people use it. And there are some lesser-known hosts that have no search function at all.

I once did an experiment posting some videos on a couple of tubes, and providing links from my site to the video. I found the net loss of surfers didn't make it worthwhile. It's much better to get a small dedicated plan. The videos load faster, and you keep your customers in your own "network."

Better yet, convert your videos to Flash and get a free or low-cost Flash player for your site. The one at jeroenwijering dot com is used by a lot of sites. If you're on the cutting edge, you can try Silverlight on your pages.
