Update on my housing situation - Life is SO weird sometimes

"Life is what happens when you've made other plans"

My favorite ever quote and SO true. Here is an update:

As a lot of you know, I posted a month ago about my job loss and struggling the last several months in order to say my home for my daughters and I. Many of you here on NP really helped me out with points, design work, and solid and caring advice. I figured it appropriate to share what transpired today, and just goes to show you how life can be so ironic.

My girls and I moved up here to our mountain resort town 1.5 years ago. When we were planning the move, there were two houses we were deciding between. One was a small but cozy house right by the lake (the lake being a huge plus, I just love looking at the beautiful thing lol), and the other was a somewhat larger cabin a few blocks from the lake. At the time I decided on the one by the lake. We were there for close to a year when we ran across the gorgeous beautiful one we're in now that I've been fighting for. We had not been looking to move, but it just kinda happened when we stopped to look at it and met the owner, and suddenly here we were.

In the meantime, my mother had moved up here a month after us, ending up right next door to the cabin we had not chosen. So she knew the owner I had dealt with who had wanted us to take it originally.

As I posted before, I lost my job just a few weeks after moving in here. Blah blah, hardship after hardship, though as I stated, my landlady has been a wonderful blessing to work with.

The past month I have spent starting my design/writing site and the response has been great. Not quite enough to get us caught up, but showing a lot of promise. Promise though doesn't pay the bills or allow us to catch up, so finally day before yesterday I started to consider giving this up, this house. Not having any idea where we would go (My mom's house is a tiny cottage.)

My mom phoned me yesterday morning, something about having called Peter, the owner of the cabin about a vacuum cleaner left outside by the previous woman who had just moved out. Peter exclaimed "I was JUST going to call your daughter!" He knew a little of my situation and was interested in offering the cabin yet again to myself and my girls. We went over there and went in again and looked around. It's half the size of here, VERY log cabin like, but also only half the amount of rent. I was honest with him about my situation, and he emphatically stated he believed I would be a solid tenant, even stating that he kept my original phone message from 2006, just in case the opportunity should ever come up again for that house and us taking it.

Therefore, it looks like we're moving!

I have not yet broken the news to my current landlady, but honestly she deserves a whole lot more than I can give to her. It's possible to make it here but not without several more months of struggling. This house really feels like home and we wanted it as such but in all actuality, I think my eventual dream anyway up here is a house AT the lake, so this is a stepping stone and will give me time to focus in on my design goals, learn PHP and other additional skills, and better provide my clients with as superior service I can, minus what has become never ending overwhelming financial stress. I can then be in a better position to repay my landlady and yet allow her to have somebody here taking on the large payment and not burdening her with that doubt.

The cabin owner also told me today he would provide storage in the massive backyard, since there is no garage like there is here. And also build a fence for our dog.

So, coincidentally, we are moving ... to the SAME house we considered taking in the first place, with my mom right next DOOR lol. I don't know, it all seemed to happen just as it was supposed to I guess, and fairly ironic.

We won't move for another few weeks to a month. I'm bittersweet and sad BUT also feel like a huge mountain (no pun lol) has been taken off my shoulders, or at least will be.

Anyway that's the situation. I wanted to update you guys. And also thank you all again for all the great support, help and advice you gave!

I think you will do ok. It's always a good move to take a cheaper rent especially in this economy.

I've been wondering how things were going with you. I've noticed in life that we often have situations that seem tragic that end up putting us back on the path we were meant to be on. I envy you your cabin in the mountains. I've been living back in the South after living in my own minor Heaven, Alaska, and I miss the mountains very much.

Thanks guys. I told my landlady yesterday so it's official. As usual she was great about it. We move in just three weeks. GAH. I'm having some definite sad moments here and there with this house, but trying to think positive.

So very true!

After ten years in the military I hate moving but it really sounds like you have a good grasp of things, may everything move easy, may you find tons of lost change behind and in the couch, and may the new place welcome you warmly!

Good luck!
