From 2k unique daily to 50, why?

It is very likely that they get tons of links specially around their premiere and not over the time. The amount of links that they receive later is insignificant comparing to that.
Who knows why your sites were banned or were there banned in the first place.
Anyway, my main point is that getting in trouble for more than 3 backlinks in a week is ridiculous.

same thing happened to my blog about a month ago and it still hasn't fully recovered. It didn't go down to 50 but it dropped a lot and took a while to build back up.

Then I am also very very sorry about my last post.
To get back to the subject. My opinion is that getting penalty with to many backlinks at once is very hard to achieve (if possible in the first place). You would have to submit to many many crappy directories and they would all (or majority) have to approve your link in a time frame of a day or two. Still, if this scenario is possible it means that it is possible for any webmaster to raise a penalty for any new site which could become his competitor. I don't think that engineers at Google are that stupid.

I agree .. 3 backlinks a week is nowhere near close to the level that will give you issues.

You add 10,000 in 2 days and you might encounter an issue though

i had a blog that was getting 800/day from a one keyword, then bam down to 50/day, changed some posts made a whole lot of 100% handwritten after a few mths.. back on top... now back to 50 after a month... its really a crapshoot

I thought there were bad neighborhood results for domains that were registered on estdomains since many spammers and black hats come from that registrar...and the site is hosted on esthosting. That could be it. I can likely be wrong, but that seems to be something I remember

If I recall in the Netpond domain forum there is a rule that forbids selling estdomains registered names for that reason.

Could be true but how can you get 10000 links in 2 days?
Even if somebody can gather 10000 links in 2 days I guess it is possible for Google to distinguish 10000 spam links (for example from directories) from 10000 natural and quality links (from all kind of sites).

Here is a part of an interview with Matt Cutts which talks a little bit about this subject:
