I run linux on one of my PC's. I don't think you get the full experience if you don't know the innerworkings. some of these new flavors are so easy and dumbed down, itsn barely the same as running linux. Just my opinion.

I have no idea why i should use Linux, lots of appz and games dont work on Linux their is a big learning curve, i have tried it on one of my older PC's, played with it for days and figured it was to complicated to work with and could not see the benefits over Windows XP.

It is maybe saver but still, life is full of risk and i prefer usability over safety

The point is that Linux is safer.

Webmasters can boot into Linux to surf and post on forums and explore. Its kinda like using a condom to prevent pregnancy and diseases. When you finally decide you want to have a baby or you feel comfortable taking more risk then you simply free willy. In the meantime you wont have to to pull out and rob yourself of the greatest pleasure known to man.

The whole reason this program was made was to please those who could not see the purpose. You want to run Windows then you run it and if you feel like taking a stroll down Linux lane you simply reboot. If you want to get serious then you look at (Wine HQ) which does in fact let you run Windows apps. There is also Parallels which is currently helping bring Mac which is Linux and Windows together in a major way. You also have VMWare and other virtualization applications sprouting up all over the place. If we refuse to embrace the initiatives that are being put in place then we will continue to be forced to accept commercial waste like Vista.

CrossOver Puts Windows Programs on Linux OS

Used to run a mandrake pc and tried a few other flavors.

Was ages ago now though.

Still play with Linux but more on a server level rather than on a desktop with a GUI.

Mark.

Well i like windows, Linux is to complicated if you wanna use a app or game you will need emulators or need to tune your Linux with commando's and shit, nope that is not for me. The same goes for the MAC, for graphic stuff it is great but if you have appz that run on windows you are screwed.

Sure windows is far from perfect and Vista is still crap but XP is great it never crashed on my machine, never had any problems with it, so i will be sticking with M$ windows for the time being

The problem with WINE is that the hacks and workarounds to get SOME of the stuff working is just not worth it.

I tried linux for a while, but never could get enough things running that I needed. When I get a new PC I'll try again, I'm sure things have improved dramatically in the last few years.

I am using Linux since 1999-2000, my first distro was RedHat 6.2. At that time Linux was geek-only system, but it made major progress since then. Now it is usable and comparatively better system than any other for most purposes, including high end servers or mobile phones.

The reason is simple - it is open. Closed systems simply cannot keep up with the progress of the open system.

You can keep Windows this program will just allow you to use both operating systems without creating a second partition. Should you want to remove it you just run the uninstaller from within Windows and its gone. This is a great option for anyone who wants to play around and not change their operating system. The setup is also very simple and requires no user input whatsoever.

I have an ubuntu install in another partition but it's out of date. If wordpress is any indication open source peeps are in love with updates, and it's a bit of a hassle.

Mainly, my 3d software is windows only, so I guess I'm stuck in M$ land for a while longer. I've been toying with blender and if I can get it to work for me like I want I'll be linux all the way on my next PC

Linux can be updated just by running the update manager it takes very little effort. You can run Blender, Inkscape, EQUINOX-3D, POV-Ray, and a number of other 3d/Vector/CAD programs are out there if you search around. GIMPshop is also available for Linux and Mac which is much like Photoshop. Even big Hollywood movie studios are using Linux to render CGI because its more efficient and cost effective.

The problem is that blender or pov-ray are not really a alternative to poser
It took me a lot of time to get a grip on poser (and poser is rather easy to
learn) and i would have to invest that time again, not to forget all the $$ i
have spent on poser props.

It's similar with 2D apps, i use gimp from time to time and it's a great app
but after all those years with PP i can do routine work half asslep or
boozed ( or both )

Exactly, with my current 3d app I can animate characters, with blender I can maybe add a few spheres and cones together, baby steps...

This sounds interesting. I run Vista. It's glitchy for sure, mainly with the good ole "not responding" temporarily freezes crap. This seems reasonable to look into at some point.

I don't see linux apps for much of the work I do. Its great for what it is, but say you need to edit video... tsol for real quality NLEs. I often see ppl say linux is ok for CAD, I checked into that for a project and it was no go either.

The gimp is nice, but its NOT photoshop. For most new users it will do many of the same things... for me, its not worth my time to learn a new app- plus most tutorials and new tricks you learn will be from ppl who use photoshop.

OTOH, linux makes a nice server. Shell scripting is sweet. There are things linux excels at, but for me its not a viable workstation.
