A Google "Sponsored Link"

If a website is at the top of Google with Sponsored Link above it, doesn't that mean the listing is paid?

Yes, either directly through Google or one their content partners.

Well, previously, the "ads" were always on the right sidebar ... today I noticed it's at the top of Google and says "sponsored link".

Maybe it's the only one for those keywords so they stick it at the top?

Pam, the sponsored ads at the top of the listings have been there for years. I believe the max is 3 spots. For example: ford mustangs - Google Search

Searches for commercial items usually have sponsored listings whereas searches for things like "president bush" won't because no one would be bidding on those keywords.

It's there for ages, somebody say you can get that TOP ad spot only if you spend lot of money with adwords.

It depends on how many advertisers they have for a particular keyword that have bidded enough, do a mainstream search and 99% of searches have sponsored results at the top and at the side.

Also it depends on whether the advertiser has geo targetted people from a certain region/country on whether some people will see them and some won't.

No no no, I know they have been there for years, but MY site hasn't .... my AdWords sites are usually on the right-hand side.

Today I'm at the very top and I only noticed it as there has been a lot more traffic. There are no ads in the right sidebar, so does this mean since I'm the only one targeting those keywords, they simply push me to the top like that?

I do a lot of searches but don't remember not finding some paid ads on the right-hand side, even for stupid searches.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, my sites show up in the sponsored spots at the top of the organic listings quite often but I'm not really sure why. I think they just randomly rotate in ads from the sidebar when no one is paying the big bucks to be there. Since we're paying per click it's in their best interest to feature our ads when they have the space available since I'm sure those sponsor ads get a far higher click rate than the sidebar ads.

Funny this question comes up. From how it was explained by one of the Google minions at Ad:tech last month is that if your adwords ad has a really high click ratio and the ad matches up very well with a high volume keyword search you are rewarded with a sponsored link above the organic results.

I was digging through an older adwords PDF by Perry Marshall and he makes a comment pretty much the same as what was said at Ad:Tech.
