Whats the best width for a paysite?

we always do it at around 728 px for the width. we alot space for backgrounds etc.

I've been seeing a lot of sites using 980 lately. I've started building at 1000 now.

i'd also go for somewhere between 960px and 1000px

Somewhere about the 955px - 975px for my personal prefs, just becaue most people still access my sites on 1024 x 768. You could do css min-width:955px;/max-width: (what ever you are comfortable with) px; and use the auto margin commands.

I'm not sure about that, If I would download something high def I would move it to network drive ... and then watch it on my tv from my network drive.

And there are also lots of people who use a laptop to stream their content .. to their tv. (then you can do that with your xbox360 also and ps3 i think)

I mostly assume when people update they would do their tv first before their computer monitor .. and with all the 'new' goodies you have to play files on your TV .. I think alot of people aint gonna bother to get a super high resolution .. on their computer because they don't watch movies there anyway.

I don't know if you read my post on the last page, but right now I definately feel that - even when viewed on 40+ inch 1080p TVs (I personally stream or download to my PS3, hooked up to my 40" Samsung M87) - higher bitrates on downloadable HD videos will have a much larger impact on video quality than going from 720p to 1080p.

On HDTVs smaller than around 37" most people will have a hard time telling the difference between 720p and 1080p on a Hollywood Blu-ray movie - playing at a variable bitrate of around 15-40,000 kbit - so 1080p vs. 720p at a comparatively rather low 4000-8000 kbit (which is what HD paysites are using now) is really not going to have much impact on video quality.
On a large screen it's simply not going to look crystal clear anyway (although certainly not anywhere near bad either) - you need higher bitrates to pull that off, even with the currently most efficient codecs.

Yeah I agree it depends on the size of your TV (and the quality of your screen also), I have a phillips 42 inch 1080i and it was fucking expensive when I bought it 1 1/2 year ago .. but I definally notice the difference between 720p and 1080i .. aswell with my xbox360 as with my satelite reciever .. so for me I would always choose 1080i/p over 720... but prolly more people just have a 720 hd tv and a smaller resolution ...

I'd go for 1024. Not everybody surfs with fullscreen browsers even on large screen.
