Always bought parts and assembled them myself, but I recently bought Dell Vostro 1400 lappy and happy with it. Cheap sturdy working horse with decent battery life.

Main rig is mostly for games now

I have a Cisnet, a brand popular at stores like Costco, Staples, etc

I should have an upgrade on it sometime next year!

I have an eMachines desktop in the office that I lugged over from the UK in a suitcase 4 years ago! Trouble is it's too hot in the office so working from laptops in the dining room is my preference.

When I went full time I started with a Sony Vaio but it didnt get on with the heat. First, the letters on the keys wore off and then keys started coming away from the keyboard, finally a hard disk failure had me off to Miami to buy a laptop to avoid the Spanish keyboard and Windows on the local machines. Bought a Toshiba, never really got on with it, even though it never really failed me it seemed half as powerful as my Vaio even though it had twice the RAM.

Then on my recent trip to the UK a few weeks ago I bought a new 17" HP laptop dual core thingy with Vista and more RAM and a decent graphics card ....apparently. First thing I did was set Vista to Windows classic so it looks like familiar. The Toshiba is still fine and I'm quite enjoying running it side by side with my new one - kind of a dual screen set up but with two mice.

Simple answer = HP

I build my own, for the price of crap with a name and so much junk on them, I can build twice the machine for the price. I dont upgrade machines, I build it use it, when I want the latest and greatest, I just build another one, and put the old one on as backup. The last time I built a new war machine, I liked it so well I built another just exactly like it.. so now I have two main machines..

Haven't had a desktop for 3-4 years now. Have two laptops, one of them is ASUS and the shitty one is Desknote(I don't think it exists anymore?)

Apple, mainly, but I do have an old XP box just to use to test websites. (It is due for replacement, so possibly a Mac Mini with bootcamp...)

I used to do that too a while back, but currently I've found that considering the small price difference between a brand machine and a hand-made one, it's not worth loosing a day of work to make one.
For example at Dell.fr yesterday I configured a configuration I really like for 600EUR (20" flat-screen included) and building an equivalent machine from parts would cost over 500EUR.

I agree with you Sleazy, but with laptops it is a whole another story. You can't assemble them yourself just like that.

Personally I am not going to work on laptop 100% of the time, simply because working on a huge 24+ inch monitor with full keyboard (most laptops have shortened version) and a large mouse that nicely sits in your hand is such a pleasure

I put "Another". I always get a design (or build myself) for the minimum of what I need installed and it saves me cash since i don't put the extras in it. I use my PC for mostly biz (graphics, site building etc)I also use it for music production but its only for demo's so I don't need anything all that elaborate there either (just soundblaster with older software works great)I save from not getting all the high end stuff u need for gaming cause if I did that I'd never get any work done....

I've got a 22" widescreen monitor hooked up to my laptop (and the small 15.4" laptop screen is running the same resolution - 1680x1050 - so that works perfectly for extended desktop. Browsers, text editors, graphics work etc. on the large monitor - file manager, Vista gadgets, small utilities etc. on the small screen) - plus of course a proper cordless mouse, speakers, printer etc.
After learning to hit the right buttons on a laptop keyboard (took me a day or two of frequent swearing), the only thing I'm really missing now and then is a numeric keypad.

But of course with that rather stationary laptop setup I could just as well be using a desktop computer. As I mentioned in my last post, I just felt like trying something new - and so far I've been very satisfied with the solution. In fact it's the first time I've ever actually had a multi monitor setup, and even if I go back to desktop systems, there's no way I'm going back to one monitor again.

my pc was basically built for me to use in editing videos. So there is no brand name for it, best to just call it custom.

I'm still using my Supermicro (4U chassis + server motherboard) with custom specs .

A few months ago I made a custom/no name dual core pc , but I'm still using my old pc , I'm using this new one as backup/spare .

I upgraded some parts of my old pc (ram, videocard, hd's, monitor ..well most of it :P), and it's still a very nice pc .

If/when I need something faster/better , I probably build it myself .

Laptop is another story , I still need to buy one ...
