I'm disappointed in Hollywood

I think it's been years since I went to a movie, and came out thinking "wow, that was an amzing movie..."

It just feels like everything coming out of Hollywood in the past decade or so has been money grabbing bullshit movies. CGI special effects, predictable action movies that have been made over and over before, or the same old sequels to movies that were bad to begin with.

I heard on the radio yesterday morning that Sex and the City made a lot more in it's opening weekend than anyone thought it would do, essentially ensuring a shitty sequel to a shitty movie.

Am I being unreasonable here? I mean.. I'm not all about the art-house movie necessarily, but where has the quality gone? So many great movies were made in the 30s, 40s, 50s.... Is it too much to ask to make a movie for a reason other than money? Do they all have to be re-makes, sequels, or based on comic books? Hollywood wake up. You're creating a junk-pile of DVDs.

I absoltely completely agree, for every one good movie coming out of hollywood there is 100 bad ones and now I either just watch old movies(pre-98) or watch non-english movies with subtitles on tv

anything they make to be deep and psycholigical turns out to be boring and superficial
anything that's suppose to be serious comes off shallow
anything that's suppose to be funny comes off as cheap
and how about some ATMOSPHERE? that's what modern movies lack more than anything

I have to kinda agree with ya Chris ...

This is part of the reason why I enjoy a good Bollywood film ... they still have a very large sense of pride in their movies which are for the most part well written, well acted, well choreographed, great story, ... usually about 3 hours long ... and if you can find a cinema that plays them, are about HALF the price of the regular Hollywood humdrum ...

Great bang for your buck!

Now if we could just get them to sell kebabs, tandoori chicken, and Kingfisher at the concessions, it would be almost a perfect outing!

There are good movies out there, they just take a little bit of digging...you know who's really to blame? The moviegoer who pays to go see movies like Meet the Spartans and One Missed Call remake. If these movies weren't making money, the studios wouldn't keep turning them out.

As a self-professed movie geek, I have come to understand that studios can't just turn out movies for fanboys and movie geeks...they have to make a profit. From those profits, they can sometimes make a good fanboy/geekfest movie.

Also, don't forget, there were a lot of shitty movies made in the 30s, 40s and 50s too, but most disappeared instead of going to video/DVD/.cable TV. There were fewer distribution channels available, so those movies went away quickly. Also, with fewer distribution channels, there were less movies being made so a better movie would stand out much more.

I can't say I really agree - but then I'm just looking for solid entertainment rather than mindblowing "wow" experiences when I'm watching movies, and I really don't think there's any shortage of the former in my favourite genres, action, sci-fi and occasionally thriller or horror.
I tend to enjoy the Summer blockbusters. Sure, the new Indiana Jones didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I enjoyed it nonetheless, and right now I'm looking forward to The Incredible Hulk, The Dark Knight (Batman Begins 2), the new X-Files movie, possibly the new animated Star Wars movie (I admittedly didn't care much for the latest three Star Wars movies, for a large part because I couldn't stand Hayden Christensen as that whiny emo girl that Darth Vader was apparently supposed to have been as a kid) and later this year the new James Bond movie.
I imagine there might be a few more that I'm leaving out.

Even the occasional mindless action movie can actually almost give me that elusive wow experience. I watched Shoot 'Em Up with Clive Owen on Blu-ray a month or two ago and I frankly thought it was downright spectacular.

Sure, there are a ton of movies every year I wouldn't want to watch even if they paid me or put a gun to my head, but in most cases that's down to the themes/genres rather than because they are necessarily bad (though many of them no doubt are).

I haven't even been paying attention to what is coming out lately because everything has been so disappointing.
Movies that I thought were still in theaters are already on pay per view & netflix.

And yes, money is number one ... these big actors have got to realize in the middle of scene that they are making a total pile of crap.

Tell me about it. I saw Indiana Jones last week and I tried hard not to sleep during the movie. Harrison Ford's son looked like a fag and there wasn't enough action.

Years ago they were under contract to a studio and even had morals clauses! They took pride in their movie making, it wasn't who could create the best special effect.

I don't go to the movies as I prefer to buy DVDs and watch at my leisure.

I don't think I've purchased a movie in 3 or 4 months. Nothing interests me other than Juno, which I still need to buy.

Sometimes watching a movie on the big screen is much better. Like Star Wars or Iron Man. (unless of course you have a mini theatre at home).

Those types don't interest me, but I do have a very large screen hi-def TV so the movies look pretty damned good.

I have a small hi-def TV in this office with a built-in DVD player and sometimes I'll throw in a DVD and listen when I work.

If you like playing games hook your T.V. with an xBox 360. Would be uber cool.

I think a lot of those movies are going straight to dvd or made for tv.

There are decent movies every now and again, but I agree that there are long periods where very shitty movies are released and leave movie watchers stranded. I actually haven't been in a movie theater since The Simpsons movie, and I was dragged into that one. It's just not worth paying that much money to see low quality movies. Wait til they come out on DVD

But were they, watch them again and see if you still think so

Arnie, Stallone, Seagal, Snipes and the blonde guy from Belgium who became a gay icon... None of them could act but each time they released a film it was a box office hit.
