Chuck, as someone who also is in chronic pain, I say: If there is a good chance this surgery will FIX your shoulder, then man up and go under the knife and become PAIN-FREE! If I had the option for my knees and back, I would.

Just suck it up and do it, my man. It's a risk vs reward thing.

My wife suffers from chronic pain from endometriosis, and I myself suffer from chronic tendonitis in my elbow and knee. Chronic pain sucks, but does it suck more than having the surgery and living pain free?
Your choices are pretty much as simple as this: either hurt more or hurt less.

Surgery sucks. But chronic pain sucks worse. I've known a few people with shoulder surgeries and they have went far better than back and neck surgeries. If I were you I'd probably do it, and I absolutely hate doctors (who have more often caused me more pain and illness then fixed issues I have).

I know what its like to be scared of the surgery. I screwed up my shoulder about 8 years ago and backed out of having surgery. I regret it to this day. Hope things work out OK for you.

You've got to weigh the pain against the surgery but if the pain gets to strong it could affect your body in other ways so surgery is probably best before you let it get to bad.

I have to have a surgery too in a few weeks. Minor but I hate being put under. I feel ya but it's true that if it can help your pain, it's worth just facing the fear.

I won't even go to the doctor so you're a lot braver than I am. I just try to live with my shoulder pain and hope it goes away.

I have not tied a chiropractor,.. there is so much metal and screws in my shoulder I doubt a chiro could do anything,.. my doctor wants the joint replaced,.. which means a lot of down time for me,..
I use alcohol to relieve pain as well,.. not healthy but at least I can pass out in a drunken stupor and get SOME rest.

Seriously, Chuck ... go get it! Yeah, it's scary (especially a joint replacement) and yeah, it will mean down time. I'm hurting tonight, and if I had the option of surgery to actually fix this I would be there in a heartbeat. You've lived with this pain for a while now. Do you remember what it feels like to NOT hurt??

I can remember being a lot more active,..
But pain has been there for so many years now that I cannot remember getting proper rest.

I guess I may consider this,.. the whole idea of joint replacement horrifies me however.

Chuck, the nature of my chronic pain lets me have days where I don't hurt (all too few if you ask me!) and those are the days I feel normal and good again ... then the pain rears back up and brings me back to reality.

But the days when I am actually pain and ache free are great. You have the opportunity to get them back. Eye on the prize, Chuck!!!

For those of y'all who don't have to live with chronic pain: DON'T take it for granted!!! Enjoy every morning you can wake up without pain, and every day you can get through without needing to pop pain pills just to function.

Chuck, what's the cause of the pain? tendons or joints or what?

I've been taking MSM(a naturally occuring substance in food) and it has actually helped my joint and my fathers lower back pain alot.. it's cheap aswell
