What's the Easiest Way to Make Custom Headers for Thumblogger and Blogger?

My sites look drab, and I'm having problems figuring out how to easily make custom headers for Blogger and Thumblogger. Any tips please? Looking for something very simple and user-friendly.

I often use a old version of paint shop pro, i just get myself a big nice image that fits my blog, cut it so that it fits nicely at the top of my blog and finally add the name of my blog in a cool font on the image. And we have: a image header
