WordpressMU

I'm about to open ~15 new blogs and I've very seriously considering using WordpressMU to handle them all. (and quite possible move the previous ones into WPMU blogs too).

Anybody here using WPMU already? Is it really like Wordpress like its doc says or are there bad surprises/limitations somewhere on the road?

I have tryed it .
But it's not as user friendly as it seems ..
After a few days of playing with it , I deleted it .

For +/- 15 blogs , I would just do seperate WP install's , my server's cp has that one click WP install thing

First you have to have a wildcard dns working properly , and you need some knowledge about apache's 'mod rewrite' with .htaccess .
(can be very frustrating with WPMU)

Then you need to close the 'signup page' , so that strangers don't make a blog on your host (I think it was ment for that..)

In otherwords, don't use it , unless you are planning 100's of blogs on one domain , and have a lot of free time to fix little things ...

But that's just my opinion

I hate to sound like a bad advertisement, but I would consider Blog Organizer for multi-blog management. Everything I've ever seen concerning WordpressMU is that unless you are going to be running a blog service for lots of users full time, it just is not worth the headache (what a way to say "what Red Metal said" ) Blogs Organizer can still manage wordpress blogs, plus a ton of freehosted blog services too, so if you needed to expand your c-class portfolio for some reason you could really easily. To me it seems like WordpressMU is for lots of blogs run by lots of people, and Blogs Organizer is for lots of blogs run by one person (or organization)

But, then again, maybe somebody has some good experiences with WordpressMU

well, yes. I have seen WPMU most times working as free blog hosting site, where people signup and create their own blogs. Pretty rarely i have seen it as platform for a webmaster to operate multiple blogs himself.

As about advantages/disadvantages i can't say anything.... I have just installed it once for a client of mine and thats all..

WordPress MU was - according to WordPress themselves - originally intended to manage multiple blogs, before it transmuted into MU (multi-user as in lots of users creating blogs via the same installation). And although it is more commonly used to run something like wordpress.com (400,000+ blogs) it can be used to run blogs on different domains, still working from a central "store" of plugins, themes, etc. Also easier come upgrade time.

However it is not without issues (albeit most are minor) and anyone contemplating using it would do well to visit the site and get a clear idea of what is involved in the various options.

Blogs Organizer, along with AutoBlogger and RSS2blog, has different functions. Blogs Organizer can post feeds out to WordPress blogs, but it doesn't otherwise attempt to maintain the sites. It only handles sites fully which it also generates. The other two post feeds only, but with more flexible options.

All three are excellent scripts, but quite different from each other (functionally as well as price-wise). Before jumping on any of them, I would recommend checking which feature-set best matches what you want.

I was seriously considering BO, but since I'll have blogs on 2 servers (one of my hosters doesn't allow adult sites, so I have 1 server for mainstream sites and one for adults) I thought I'd give WPMU a good try before to pay 2 BO licences...

FYI you don't need 2 BO licenses. One install will handle all your sites, which you can confirm here [ref link]

and yes, you don't need 2 licenses. With 1 script install you can run adult and mainstream blogs as well. Everything can be categorized, so you won't mix stuff, and there are no leads to the main script install domain at the blogs themselves. And anyways, if you wanna go with 2 script installs, have in mind i have discounts for secondary licenses

Is there any sort of trial or demo version of BO with limited functionality? Or perhaps even a pack of screenshots/flash videos with detailed overview of what it does and how it works?

I understand this product is unique still paying $135 for something you cannot even try first seems to be a bit over the top, especially for a newbie adult webmaster

there you can login to the admin and see all features and functionals by yourself.

About the movies and stuff, i am just working on them and soon should be ready.

MU is tough but we couldn't find anything better at the time, maybe now. It was hard to install, full of glitches and it doesn't allow for much customization for the individuals who sign up for blogs. It's a good base though if you've got a programmer who can tweak it.
